Anambra state government supports local adoption of Food Safety Management Committee

ABUJA – 23 March 2018

A Food Safety Awareness Campaign was organized in Awka, Anambra state, from 20 March to 21 March, 2018. Two high-level stakeholder meetings took place during that occasion. The Food Safety Awareness Campaign is a collaboration between United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) within the context of the European Union funded National Quality Infrastructure Project in Nigeria (NQIP). The exercise is aimed at creating awareness on basic principles and the significance of food safety to representatives of relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and the Organized Private Sector (OPS).

Representatives of UNIDO-NQIP, FMoH, and the National Food Safety Management Committee (NFSMC) met with the Anambra state governor and permanent secretaries of relevant state ministries on 20 March during a consultative meeting. The governor, represented by the deputy governor, Mr. Nkem Okeke, pushed for the formation of a State Food Safety Management Committee (SFSMC), a point reiterated during the Food Safety advocacy and sensitization meeting on 21 March.

UNIDO-NQIP National Expert on Food Safety, John Tehinse, made a technical presentation to participants on the “Vision for Nigeria’s Food Safety System and Overview of the Proposed Reforms”, which was followed by an interactive session.

Participants were pooled from various sectors including: health, agriculture, community development, processing, export, information and the media.
