ABUJA 20 March 2018 – The seventh Technical Committee on Metrology in Nigeria took place in Abuja on 16 March 2018, during which stakeholders discussed the progress of legal metrology practices in the country.

A technical committee for metrology was developed through the National Quality Infrastructure Project in Nigeria (NQIP), funded by the European Union and implemented by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Membership of the committee comprises Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Weights and Measures Department (WMD) of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI). The Metrology Technical Committee was established with a number of objectives, including:  assistance and provision of input for the development of a National Metrology Institute (NMII); ensuring that calibration labs are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for priority fields; guidance and input for legal metrology improvement, recognition & adoption of best international practices; and, provision of specialized input to specific work items.

In line with its objectives, the Technical Committee for Metrology (TCM) met under the chair of Director General, SON. The output of the meeting include: SON has provided assurance to UNIDO-NQIP that Block C of the NMI, which is still under construction, will be ready by the end of April 2018, in order for the installation of the equipment for pressure, temperature and electrical laboratories supplied by the NQIP. The laboratories are also expected to be in operation and metrologists trained.

It was also stated that a study tour/training has been finalized through UNIDO NQIP support at National Physical Laboratory (NPL-UK) to understand the workings of industrial and legal metrology and to undergo key training in the field of legal metrology such as pre-packed goods, pattern evaluation and approval.
